KNOWLEDGE MAPPING

Knowledge mapping is a process by which organizations can identify and categorize knowledge assets within their organization such as people, processes, content, and technology. It allows an organization to fully leverage the existing expertise resident in the organization, as well as identify barriers and constraints to fulfilling strategic goals and objectives. It is constructing a roadmap to locate the information needed to make the best use of resources, independent of source or form.
(W. Vestal, APQC, 2002)

Knowledge mapping also know as knowledge audit. Knowledge mapping is an important practice consisting of survey, audit, and synthesis. It aims to track the acquisition and loss of information and knowledge. It explores personal and group competencies and proficiencies. It illustrates or "maps" how knowledge flows throughout an organization. Knowledge mapping helps an organization to appreciate how the loss of staff influences intellectual capital, to assist with the selection of teams, and to match technology to knowledge needs and processes.
The intention of K-Mapping is as follows:
  1. To map out target organization’ core business activities.
  2. To discover cross-knowledge sharing opportunities between department and / or section. K-Mapping exercise helps staff discover that some other section or departments may be holding several important knowledge that are useful.
  3. To develop intervention measure once the knowledge gap has been identified and opportunities for cross sharing are discovered. Intervention measures can be formulated to address work issues.

  3. Are decisions made with all the right knowledge?
  4. Where should we focus our improvement efforts?
  5. Summarize the analysis:
  6. Create list of key strengths (things we do well should continue)
  7. Create list of key opportunities for improvement (things we need to fix), and expected benefits
Determine the knowledge required by brainstorming, or conduct interviews with the process owners.
